Teak deck maintenance

Yeah, it will start soon … get your boat teak deck ready

Attention all boat owners! Is your teak deck looking tired and worn out? A teak deck gives your yacht a handsome and luxurious look. A new teak deck is brown in colour. After a while, the teak deck changes colour by means of a natural process from golden brown to its finaal appearance: a natural silver grey.  Weather conditions (e.g. sun exposure) causes fading, foot traffic wears it out, and mold and mildew growth makes it hazardous. Keep your deck looking brand new with regular maintenance and cleaning. Don't let a tired deck detract from your boat's beauty and value. Invest in a facelift today!

Here are 5 tips to give your boat's teak deck a fresh look and keep it in good condition:

Prevention. Spend less time on restoring

  1. Wash the teak deck once a week with ordinary fresh or salt water without cleaning agents so as to prevent pollution.
  2. Cleaning the teak deck once or twice a year. Make a soap solution consisting of 1% soft soap or use ohter biodegradable cleaning products to keep your yacht clean without polluting.
  3. Take a soft brush and swab the deck, exerting light pressure on the brush, across the grain of the wood or make rotating movements.
  4. This is an effective way of removing the contaminants from the deck without damaging the deck.
  5. Treat your teak deck periodically. If the teak gets a stain or mark that regular cleaning can’t handle, it may be necessary to give it a light scrubbing or sanding. Only use a brush with soft bristles or fine-grit sandpaper, but never apply too much pressure when scrubbing or sanding. Always brush across the grain, never with the grain, as doing so removes more of the soft teak fibers and wears the teak down faster. Choose carefully the products of teak deck care.

To the above-mentioned maintenance, it's recommend you to have your teak deck inspected at the boatyard about every five years. The aim of this inspection is to check for damage to the deck and inspect the caulked seams. Caulked seams may become worn over time. It is important to replace or repair these worn caulked seams in time to prevent moisture penetrating between or below the teak deck planks.
